Mulk Raj Anand was a influential indian english writer and pioneer in portraying the lives of india's underprivileged. He studied at cambridge university and later continued it in london. his novels such as UNTOUCHABLE (1935), ACROSS THE BLACK WATER (1940) and COOLIE (1936) are celebrated for their deep empathy, vivid realism and critism of the caste system and colonial rule. His works always tackled the discriminating evils embedded in society. He was one of the founding members of PROGRESSIVE WRITERS' ASSOCIATION, which aimed to address social issues through literature and continues to be studied for it's historical and cultural significance.
